Morning Report: Shuffling Things Up

Shuffling Cap Dollars: There were a couple of moves yesterday and this week for that matter that had almost nothing to do with basketball and virtually everything to do with business – and there were some willing partners. The Memphis Grizzlies and LA Clippers have both been the beneficiaries of some easy money. The Clippers facilitated a move with the Toronto Raptors agreeing to take on Hassan Adams in exchange for some cash. The Clippers immediately waived Adams and re-signed Fred Jones to a 10-day deal. The move put the Raptors just under the NBA Luxury tax threshold and netted the Clippers just over $1 million. In exchange the Raptors not only get tax relief, they also gain a 2015 second draft pick that's so protected (through the 55th pick) they will likely not see it. The Miami HEAT informed Shaun Livingston they were going to waive him after the HEAT's game on Monday, and it was widely reported as though he was waived officially, however the HEAT found a willing partner in Memphis yesterday, that traded another protected second round draft pick in exchange for Livingston and cash. There are some interesting twists to this Heat/Grizzlies deal – Livingston's trade value is $850,000 – that was the value of his contract. The contract was guaranteed for $350,000 of which Miami has already paid Shaun $340,000 of it through 34 games, so in waiving Livingston yesterday the Grizzlies owed roughly $10,000 in cash, but is rumored to have received more than $500,000 from the HEAT to make the deal. The HEAT in return get a $850,000 trade exception which they can hold until this time next year and received a 2012 draft pick with some quirky conditions - Memphis would have to finish with one of the five worst records in 2011-12 for Miami to receive the pick, and then is protected through the 55th pick. The San Antonio Spurs cut loose Anthony Tolliver, it's believed they may bring him back on a 10-day contract, but he was released simply to avoid guaranteeing his deal for the remainder of the season. The Denver Nuggets triggered a slightly different cap clearing deal sending Chucky Atkins and his $3.2 million deal to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for Johan Petro and his $1.94 million deal. The Nuggets also sent $700,000 in cash and a protected 2009 second round draft choice. The Nuggets now get firmly under the NBA luxury tax threshold and have another $1.3 million trade exception to play with, as well as the coveted backup big both the team and the coaching staff have been begging for.
